I am a painter, so you might expect me to say this. But I also remember the first time I stood in front of a real painting and felt the room change around me. It was not the image that moved me. It was the presence of it. Someone had been there, with paint, making decisions, and I could feel it.
That is the difference I want to talk about today: original painting or art print, and why I think an original is worth choosing.
What you are actually buying
When you buy a print, you are buying a picture of a painting. It can be beautiful, and I have nothing against prints. They are affordable and easy to frame.
When you buy an original, you are buying the painting itself, the very surface I stood over, the very layers I built up and sometimes scraped back. There is no other like it. Not a second edition, not a larger size, not a limited run. One.
You can see my hands in it
I paint with acrylic and ink, mixing techniques, using both a palette knife and a brush. I lay color over color, let some of it dry, then pull a little of the earlier layer back through. A print flattens all of that into one smooth surface.
In an original you can see where the knife dragged the paint into a ridge. You can see where a thin wash of ink settled into the grain of the canvas. Step to the left and the light catches the texture differently. Come back in the evening and the painting looks different again. A print looks the same from every angle at every hour. An original keeps changing with the light, and with you.
The colors are truer
Printers work with a limited range of ink, and some of the most luminous colors in a painting, the deep blues, the glowing oranges, the layered transparencies, simply do not reproduce faithfully. What you see on a screen or on a print is an approximation. What hangs on your wall in the original is the real thing.
It carries a story
My butterflies are not decoration. They came out of a turning point in my own life, a time when something had to change, and painting them was part of how I moved through it. When someone brings one of those paintings home, they are not just getting a pretty image. They are getting a piece of that moment, and they become part of its story.
That is something a print cannot hold. An original painting has a beginning, a maker and a journey to your wall. People who live with original art often tell me the same thing: they notice it every day, and it never gets old.
Original art holds its meaning (and often its value)
Prints are made in quantity, and that is why they cost less. Originals are scarce by nature. Buying from a living artist also supports the work directly, and the value of a painting can grow as an artist's career grows. I would never tell you to buy art only as an investment, but it is a comforting thought that an original is unlikely to lose its significance the way mass-produced decor can.
When a print makes sense
I want to be fair. A print can be a good choice if:
- you are working with a small budget
- you want to try a style before committing
- you need several matching pieces for a space
- it is for a rental or a child's room where things get knocked about
If you love an artist's work and an original is not possible right now, a print is a lovely way to start. Many people begin there and come back for an original later.
So how do you know it is time for an original?
For me it comes down to a simple feeling. If you keep thinking about a painting after you close the page, that is your answer. You do not need to understand art, know the right words or match it perfectly to your sofa. You only need to be moved by it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an original painting and an art print? An original is painted by hand by the artist and is one of a kind. A print is a reproduction of a painting, made in quantity.
Is an original painting worth the extra cost? If you love it and want something unique with real texture and a story, yes. Originals are scarce, and you are supporting the artist directly.
Do original paintings last? Acrylic is durable and keeps its color well when kept out of harsh direct sunlight, so an original can stay beautiful in your home for many years.
Can I buy an original painting online with confidence? Yes, when you can see close-up photos, clear dimensions, materials and delivery details, and when there is a real artist you can contact.
Come and meet the paintings
If something in this post spoke to you, I would love for you to look through my original paintings. Each one is painted by hand and each one is the only one. If you have a question about a piece, write to me. I answer personally.
