Why I Paint Butterflies: A Journey of Transformation, Growth and Learning to Trust Your Wings

When Art Begins to Change

Sometimes, an artist feels an inner need to change direction — to explore a new subject, discover a different visual language, and express something that has been quietly growing within.

In my latest artistic journey, I felt a strong inner desire to move away from the abstract paintings that had defined my previous work and embrace a new subject and motif. It was not simply a change in style. It was a deeper need to explore a different dimension of my artistic expression and connect my paintings with a subject that carries a profound personal meaning.

This desire led me to butterflies.

For me, butterflies represent far more than beauty. They embody one of the most extraordinary processes in nature: the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. This remarkable metamorphosis became the inspiration for my new collection, Life with Wings (Život s krídlami).

The Hidden Potential Within Us

What fascinates me most about the transformation of a caterpillar is that the butterfly is not simply a different version of what existed before. Its transformation reveals a completely new form of life, beauty, and possibility.

Something similar happens within us as human beings.

We all carry hidden potential — parts of ourselves that may remain undiscovered for years. Sometimes, life circumstances, personal experiences, or an inner longing encourage us to look beyond who we have been and consider who we might become.

Like the caterpillar, we may not always see what lies within us. Our potential can remain hidden beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to emerge.

I believe that personal transformation does not necessarily mean becoming someone entirely different. Sometimes, it means allowing ourselves to become who we have always had the potential to be.

This idea is at the heart of my butterfly paintings. Through colour, movement, and the delicate yet powerful form of the butterfly, I explore the relationship between our inner world and the beauty that can emerge when we allow ourselves to change.

Why Butterflies? The Beauty of Fragility and Strength

There is a beautiful contradiction in the butterfly. Its wings appear fragile, yet they carry it through the world. Its beauty seems delicate, yet its existence represents an extraordinary journey of transformation.

This contrast resonates deeply with me.

As human beings, we often associate strength with resistance, certainty, and the ability to remain unchanged. But I see another kind of strength in the butterfly — the courage, in a symbolic sense, to emerge into a new existence, vulnerable yet capable of flight.

Fragility is not weakness. It can be a reminder of our humanity, our sensitivity, and our capacity to grow.

Through my paintings, I want to explore this delicate balance between vulnerability and strength. I want to celebrate the beauty of change, the courage required to embrace it, and the freedom that comes when we begin to trust ourselves.

The butterfly becomes a symbol of personal growth, inner transformation, beauty, and fragility — all the qualities that make the human experience so complex and meaningful.

Life with Wings: More Than the Destination

My new collection, Life with Wings, is not only about the butterfly at the end of its transformation. It is about the journey that makes its flight possible.

It is about the moments when we feel uncertain, when we outgrow familiar places, and when we sense that something within us needs to change. It is about the invisible work of becoming — the patience, the discovery, and the courage to step into something new.

I see the butterfly as a reminder that transformation takes time. We cannot always control its pace, and we may not immediately understand where it will lead us. Yet there is beauty in allowing ourselves to move forward without having every answer.

For me, Life with Wings is an invitation to recognise our own journey. To acknowledge how far we have come, to accept our vulnerability, and to remain open to the possibilities that lie ahead.

Because the most meaningful transformation is not always visible to others. Sometimes, it begins quietly, deep within us, long before the world can see the change.

Learning to Trust Your Own Wings

Ultimately, this is why I paint butterflies.

I want my paintings to be more than decorative objects. I hope they can become personal reminders of something meaningful — a new beginning, a period of growth, a challenge overcome, or a part of ourselves that we are finally ready to embrace.

Every butterfly carries its own character, colours, and presence. In the same way, every person has a unique story and a different path toward transformation.

When someone chooses one of my butterfly paintings for their home, I hope they find something that speaks to their own experience. Perhaps a particular colour evokes a feeling. Perhaps the butterfly reminds them of a change they have experienced or one they are preparing to make.

Or perhaps it simply reminds them that beauty and strength can exist together, even in the most delicate forms.

I cannot tell someone what their transformation should look like. That journey belongs to them. Through my art, I can only offer a symbol, an emotion, and an invitation to reflect.

Because Life with Wings is not just about becoming a butterfly. It is about the journey of learning to trust your own wings.

And perhaps, in the end, that is what transformation truly means: finding the courage to become, and the freedom to fly in your own way.
